The Sports Players Guide To Healthy Teeth

Posted on

If you play in any sports, then you want to make sure you take a few extra steps to protect your teeth. This way, you know that the chances are good that you can take a good hit without worrying so much about knocking out or breaking one or more of your teeth. The information offered in this article will help you better prepare for playing those sports while protecting your teeth.

Get fitted for a professional grade mouth guard

While you can purchase a mouth guard at certain chain stores and sporting goods stores, it may prove to be better to go directly to your dentist for one. This way, you can be sure that the mouth guard you have is properly fitted and made from high quality material. You should store your mouth guard in a cool, dry place when it isn't used. Also, make sure you clean it after use so bacteria doesn't build up in it.

Carry a dental emergency first aid kit with you in your sports bag

Put a kit together with everything you may need in case of a dental emergency inside of it. Bring it with you to all of your sporting events and practices. While you do want to make sure the kit has everything you need, it should still be as small as possible, so you can easily fit it into your sports bag and/or locker.

Some of the things that you want to have in your emergency kit is sterile gauze, a clean rag, a small zip lock baggie, a small container of hand sanitizer, a small bottle of water, anti-inflammatories, tweezers, and the business card of an emergency dentist in your general area.

Keep your teeth strong

The stronger your teeth are, the better the chances will be that they can take impact and suffer the least amount of damage possible. For this reason, you want to be sure you make it to all of your routine dental visits and do your best to eat a diet that has plenty of healthy foods, including those that are good for your teeth.

Now that you have a better idea of ways you can go about preventing dental injuries when you are involved in sports, you will know that you are doing the best you can to take care of your mouth. If you do end up breaking a tooth, get in to the dentist right away so you can have a crown put on that will protect you from developing a cavity or other worsening problems.
