Why Do You Have Bad Breath?

Posted on

That foul odor you keep smelling may very well be your bad breath. There are a number of reasons your breath is not exactly smelling like roses lately. Some may be due to what you're putting into your body, but it could also be due to medical issues as well. Read on for a few factors that could be causing bad breath and what you can do to remedy this.

Some Foods And Drinks

The food you eat may not be sitting in your stomach properly. Some foods may react with the acids in your stomach and give off an odor in your breath. Foods such as garlic, onions, dairy products and spicy foods may all lead to bad breath. Coffee and alcohol can also leave you with bad breath.

Not Brushing Properly

If you aren't brushing your teeth properly, it may be leaving you with bad breath. The built-up plaque and bacteria in your mouth will eventually lead to bad breath. Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush for at least two minutes. Remember to brush your tongue and gums where this bacteria may also be hiding as well. Your tongue and gums should be pink in color. If your gums are red, you aren't brushing them well enough. If your tongue is white, you definitely need to brush it - that white stuff is plaque.

Dry Mouth

If you feel like you have cotton-mouth all the time, it may be because you suffer from a dry mouth disorder. A dry mouth could cause bad breath as there is a lack of saliva fighting off bacteria and germs. To improve a dry mouth you should be sure to drink more water to stay hydrated and to keep the mouth moist. There are also medicinal treatments to help improve dry mouth. Talk to your dentist about your dry mouth and what treatments will help improve this.

Tooth Decay

If you have tooth decay, it may be causing your bad breath. Infections in the mouth or decaying teeth may lead to odors. If you have any issues with your teeth, be sure to visit your dentist for a checkup and for treatment. Decaying teeth may need to be pulled to prevent further dental health issues or other health issues. Poor dental health can lead to health issues with major organs in the body such as the heart and kidneys.

If you have bad breath, there are factors that are causing this problem. Some may be minor, but it could also be due to a medical condition. If you have chronic bad breath, visit a dentist, such as at Milner Dentistry, for a checkup.
